We love it when winter rolls around. Most people associate winter with unhealthy comfort food and inactivity, but it definitely doesn’t have to be that way!! If you’re a beach baby, and are wondering how you’re going to survive this winter with that golden glow intact, here are our top tips.
Bare it all
Skin is a great indicator of overall health and wellbeing, and winter is the perfect time to shun bronzed skin for your natural glow. Regular exfoliation is arguably the best beauty tool to keep skin in tip-top shape.
Here at Pure Glow, we love a good body scrub, and we’re passionate about supporting local businesses. Lucky for us (and you!) local brand Clean Slate make it really easy to love both of these things at the same time. Made in Fremantle, their coffee scrub is divine. Top tip: once you’ve scrubbed, let the grounds dry on your skin before washing off. It sounds a bit odd, but you NEED to try this the formula contains coconut oil, carrot infused oil, grape seed oil, rose hip oil & vitamin e, which will soak into your skin and leave it feeling super soft. Amazing!!
Dry brushing is another great way to exfoliate. It’s an Aryuvedic technique which boosts circulation (seeya, cellulite!) and helps to reveal healthy, glowing skin. It’s also REALLY cheap all you need is a brush with reasonably stiff natural bristles (check out Priceline or The Body Shop) and your fine self. This video is a good little “how-to” tutorial.
Fake it till you make it (back to Summer)
If you HAVE to tan this winter, make it fake. We (should) all know by now that solariums are terrible news for skin, and many fake tan formulas used in salons contain some pretty nasty chemicals. Eco Tan is a natural formula that contains no nasties and gives a great colour once you’ve used up your current stock (no point in wasting product you’ve already bought) give this a go.
Despite being the type of people who do make friends with salad, we understand it can lose its appeal during winter. However, that doesn’t mean you have permission go months without looking sideways at a bag of spinach!! Your body has the same nutritional needs as it does during summer (and potentially more if you’re fighting a pesky winter cold). Keep your green juice habit up try sipping on our Green Guru or Wonder Greens juice 30 mins before a hot meal (check out our recipe suggestions below). You’ll be getting all the benefits of the juice, followed by the warmth you’re craving. Alternatively, add your greens to a post-workout smoothie (for bonus points, include protein powder for a muscle-building boost!). Take a few handfuls of spinach, half a cucumber, some fruit and around 250ml of your non-dairy milk of choice and blend, baby, blend!!
Turn up the heat
Cold winter mornings might not be ideal for an early morning run, but that’s no reason to pack your workout routine in completely. Exercise is vital for mental and physical health, and sweat is one of the body’s most powerful detoxification processes. Plus we all know the line from Legally Blonde about exercise, endorphins and making you happy if you’re looking to glow this winter, you need to get moving!!
Don’t be afraid to get creative with your workouts if you’re craving the heat, how about trying Bikram Yoga? If you like to work out outdoors, but you’re losing motivation in the cold, try a bootcamp class! If you’re just looking for a motivation boost, try GymPact it’s an app that lets you set goals, and literally makes you pay if you don’t stick to your commitments.
Another awesome option for heat lovers is the Far-Infrared Sauna. Instead of using steam to heat up a room (and you!), these saunas emit infrared light which directly warms your body. As your body temperature increases, your heart rate rises and you begin to sweat, mimicking the effect of exercise. The sweating caused by saunas is a great way to detoxify, and can assist in weight loss and cardiovascular health, as well as dramatically improving skin tone and texture. What’s not to love?!
Comfort food cravings can derail even the best of intentions, but it’s definitely possible to indulge your cravings and keep your diet on track.
You can also use food to boost your immunity (nobody looks cute with a cold). Garlic is a super immuno-booster and works really well in stir-fries. Chilli is great for revving up your metabolism and helping you sweat out any nasties try adding some into a hearty veggie curry. Ginger also has a number of health benefits, and tastes great in a warming chicken soup.
Try to eat carbohydrate-heavy meals before or after you exercise your body will be primed to use the extra energy at these times. This is an easy trick to keep you glowing!!
Another tip is to substitute stodgy fillers for vibrant, healthy ingredients go for a vegetable stack instead of lasagne, or zucchini noodles instead of pasta in your spaghetti bolognaise. Quinoa is also a great substitute for traditional carbs, plus it’s super high in protein and other amino acids to give you a great winter boost. Try it in salads with roasted winter veg think pumpkin, beetroot and carrot topped with some feta (yum!!).
We love hearing your ideas – how do you get your glow on (and keep it up!) during winter?
